Digital Signal Processing: From Past to Present

In the 1960s and 1970s, DSP was concerned largely with filtering, FFTs, and some limited forms of speech processing. Parts of my own graduate work directly followed up on important ideas in digital filtering and FFTs that originated right here at Rice University. Moreover, Sidney Burrus was the first person introduced to me by my Ph.D. adviser when I attended my first IEEE technical conference. After relating something of those early days, this talk will go on to address a more modern topic that illustrates the increasing trend toward multidimensional signal processing and the ever-tighter coupling of signal processing with applications. In particular, we will discuss the problem of passive imaging of aircraft using reflected radio and television signals.
